Prepare for ‘Operation Abhyaas’: Nationwide Civil Defence Mock Drill on 7 May 2025

7 May 2025 will mark a significant day in Hyderabad as it participates in the nationwide ‘Operation Abhyaas’, a crucial civil defence mock drill designed to enhance public safety and emergency preparedness. This exercise, aimed at simulating an air raid scenario, will test both citizens and emergency response teams, ensuring that the city is ready for any unforeseen threats.

What is ‘Operation Abhyaas’?

‘Operation Abhyaas’ is a government-initiated nationwide drill targeting 244 high-risk districts—including Hyderabad. Conducted under the Civil Defence Act of 1968, it’s part of a broader strategy to prepare civilians for emergencies and protect them in case of hostile attacks, ensuring the readiness of local authorities and the public alike.

When and Where Will the Drill Take Place?

  • Date: 7 May 2025
  • Time: 4 PM – 4:30 PM
  • Location: Hyderabad (within the Outer Ring Road limits)

At 4 PM, a two-minute air raid siren will ring across the city, simulating an incoming attack. The siren will be heard from industrial sirens, police mikes, and fire vehicle alarms.

Why is This Drill Important?

  1. Enhance Public Safety: The drill will help citizens understand how to react during an air raid, minimizing panic and ensuring their safety.
  2. Strengthen Emergency Response: It will involve various emergency services—police, fire, medical teams—practicing coordinated actions in the face of a disaster.
  3. Public Awareness: Citizens will learn essential emergency response protocols to stay safe during real-world threats.

How Should You Prepare?

  • Stay Calm: Don’t panic! The siren is part of a safety exercise. Treat it as a practice drill and follow the instructions.
  • Take Shelter: As soon as the siren sounds, head to the nearest secure building. Avoid public spaces.
  • Stay Informed: Listen to updates via TV, radio, or official government apps.
  • Don’t Spread Rumors: Stick to official communication channels for updates and guidance.
  • Turn Off Utilities: Switch off gas, electricity, and water at home to prevent accidents.

Where Will the Impact Be Simulated?

The mock attack will be simulated in key areas of Hyderabad, including:

  • Secunderabad and Golkonda Cantonments
  • Kanchan Bagh
  • Nacharam

Exact locations will be confirmed a day before the drill, so stay tuned for updates.

What Happens During the Drill?

  1. Police: They will secure the affected areas and ensure smooth access for emergency responders.
  2. Fire and Rescue: Firefighters and SDRF teams will conduct search and rescue operations, fight fires, and clear debris.
  3. Medical Services: Medical teams will be on the ground for triage, first aid, and patient evacuation to temporary hospitals.
  4. Transport: Civilians will be moved to safe shelters or demilitarized zones.
  5. GHMC and Civil Supplies: Essential supplies will be provided at the shelters.

Blackout Measures: Realistic Wartime Simulation

To simulate the effect of an air raid, blackout measures will be put in place:

  • Streetlights will be switched off, and vehicle headlights will be dimmed to reduce visibility.

The Final Countdown: 4:30 PM

At 4:30 PM, the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will sound the final siren, signaling the end of the drill. This marks the conclusion of the exercise, demonstrating the importance of effective response and coordination.

What’s Next?

  • Full Participation Expected: Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the drill and follow the instructions given by civil defense personnel and wardens.
  • Official Information Only: Ensure that you rely on official sources for updates during the drill. Avoid panic and misinformation.

How Other States are Participating

This drill isn’t limited to Hyderabad alone. States like Karnataka and Kerala will also be conducting similar mock drills to test their civil defence preparedness. The Ministry of Home Affairs has provided specific guidelines for each region to ensure a coordinated national response.

A Step Towards a Safer Future

The 7 May 2025 mock drill is not just a practice run; it’s an essential part of our national effort to be prepared for the unexpected. By participating in ‘Operation Abhyaas’, Hyderabad will strengthen its resilience in the face of potential threats, ensuring the safety of every resident.

We urge all citizens to stay informed, remain calm, and participate in this critical exercise. Together, we can ensure a safer, more prepared Hyderabad!
